On Fair Trade Day
A Fair Trade Break

20080510-ftf_break_g.JPG

While I kept talking & talking & talking
Talking & talking & demonstrating

20080510-fair-trade-fair_tasting-coco-sugar.JPG

From nine to nine
And still I felt fine

Fine till the next day
Sunday Farmers’ Market Day

My mind was willing
But the body was protesting

My weak heart had this to say:
At home you have to stay

KABLON FARM FOODS

kablon-farm2.JPG

KABLON FARM FOODS, an organic farming & food processing community in Tupi, South Cotabato, Mindanao in the Philippines. The community is made up of 10 families and has a 70-hectare organic farm and a food processing centre. Their products range from pure cacao tablets to fruit juices, fruit preserves, and spices. Newest star products include coconut sugar and a whole range of jams and preserves processed with the low GI sugar.

KABLON products do more good than pleasing our palette and fortifying our health. In 2001, impressed by KABLON products introduced at a peace and development seminar, a commander of the Moro National Liberation Front decided to persuade MNLF members in his hometown to drop their guns and pick up their hoes again to dig and plant and produce items like KABLON to secure a sustainable wholesome future.

For its pioneering efforts and outstanding achievements, KABLON FARM FOODS has received numerous rewards. Recently, it has also been selected by APFTI (Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade Inc.) to participate in an EU programme to assist capable small Fair Trade producers to meet requirements of the European market.

Golden Tree

golden-tree-arts.JPG

Sad to see
So much misery on earth
So much more to be done

Glad there are
So many willing hearts
So many out-reaching hands

From Golden Tree Arts:

In northern Calcutta, there is a small but very well known district called Sonagachi, or Golden Tree. It is here that over 6,000 prostitutes work in multi-storied brothels many not through choice but because of poverty.

Golden Tree Arts is a fair-trade, socially responsible organization that empowers the disadvantaged. We will operate in partnership with the Kolkata-based business, Love Calcutta Arts who hires at-risk women and instills in them dignity and self-worth by training them with artisan skills. We enable their economic freedom by bringing their merchandise to the US marketplace. The market for socially responsible products is rapidly growing: the fair trade business in North America grossed an estimated $75 Million in 2004, a 17% increase over 2003. With fair trade certification, you can rest assured that the producers were paid a fair, sustainable wage that promotes opportunity. Golden Tree Arts empowers these disadvantaged women in developing countries to be able to achieve a better life.

Fair-and-Healthy, FMIR, BREAKTHROUGH (Dedicated to SP)

A snaily and weary process
For my mosquito project to mature
But at long last a breakthrough

Remember how
In Jan 2006 approached by a super Supermarkt
I replied plainly we’re only interested in NGOs

Remember how
At the Oxfam FT Seminar in Aug 2007
I stood up and confessed I’d changed my mind

Above me
Not one lucky star
A whole galaxy

Just as my other half was again despairing
A marketing team now fell from Heaven
To help dot HK with mini selling points

Share
My joy
My EXCITEMENT

Fanny-Min:)

Holistic Hong Kong January 2008 Issue 76

(Reprinted from Positive News, Hong Kong)

To visit Hong Kong’s most original Fair Traders, you will need to travel to the New Territories. In the mountains of Sai Kung, Fanny-Min Becker, runs Fair-And-Healthy, a home-based business which sells organic and natural goodies such as dried mango, banana chips, virgin coconut oil, sugar and tea. This passionate and devoted Fair Trader was inspired to start her project after she heard the stories of Filipino farmers whom she met while protesting against the WTO.
